Collagen is one of the most important structural proteins of our body. The sun's rays are known to cause structural alterations to the dermal layer of the skin, with the appearance of deep wrinkles, loss of elasticity and the onset of problems typical of prematurely aged skin.

Two strategies can contribute to maintaining our systemic and topical collagen ‘pool’: reintegration with nutrient substances and dietary supplements, and skin protection with sunscreens. The research group of Prof Manfredini has for years been investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying early ageing and new functional ingredients for supplements and foods (“Cosmeto-Foods”) as well as cosmetics. Aware of the natural bio-affinity between our food and our skin, the research team has investigated skin products, proposing a new class of ‘sustainable’ cosmetic products known as “food grade cosmetics®”.

The seminar will examine these two concepts and the importance of averting premature ageing of the dermal structures caused by UV rays. The meeting will also include an interactive section in which participants’ eating habits and cosmetic routines will be examined and compared with their collagen ‘health status’, measured with specialist bio-engineering techniques. The results will provide indications as to specific dermo-cosmetic and/or nutritional measures that could help improve the function and state of health of the individual’s organs and tissues, especially the skin.

The Mediterranean Diet sums up the eating habits of the populations of Mediterranean rim countries and is characteristically made up of large quantities of greens, fruit, whole grain cereals, legumes and a considerable amount of fish and olive oil. It includes few saturated fats like butter and other animal fats, dairy produce, red meats and poultry, but a regular and moderate consumption of red wine, drunk with meals.

Studies carried out after World War II (1945) by the American researcher Ancel Keys showed how this type of diet allowed the populations of countries like Italy and Greece to have longer life expectancy and better health than the populations of northern Europe and the United States. In 2010, the Mediterranean Diet was recognised as an Intangible UNESCO Cultural Heritage. The motivations for the listing mention the importance of “lifestyle” characteristics, not just Mediterranean eating habits.

Numerous epidemiological studies have confirmed that the Mediterranean Diet plays a role in promoting health, in particular with regard to the prevention of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases. In this framework, the NU-AGE European Project coordinated by Prof Claudio Franceschi of Bologna University - started in 2011 and concluded last May - is an important instrument to understand how diet can improve the health and quality-of-life of the elderly.

Prof Franceschi and his research group are pioneers in the study of centenarians. In 2000, they posited that chronic low-grade inflammation - called “inflammaging” - is one of the characteristics and main causes of human ageing.

The seminar will take a close look at the special features of the Mediterranean Diet as a powerful and flexible instrument with which to permanently and systemically modulate the process of chronic inflammation, the cause of a range of diseases and an integral part of our response to stress in all phases of life, especially among the elderly.

Marvellous things take place in the obscurity of our bodies that research is only now bringing to light, such as the physiological and preventive action of many secondary plant metabolites entering the body as part of the diet, supplements or herbal therapy substances. All this has unexpected consequences not only for our health but also for the way we read the results of studies seeking to validate the action of medicinal plants. It also impacts the way we should study these issues in the future and, last but not least, the efficacy we attributed to these products.

Scientific research on the health enhancing effects of most plant-derived secondary metabolites is hampered by the limitations inherent in comparing or equating experimental data with the physiological reactions in man. These limitations, especially when omitted or only partly explained, lead to distorted communication being given to consumers. The presentation will consider five key points, all illustrated with practical examples: 1) the use of in vitro methods that do not really mirror the conditions of human physiology; 2) the use of dosages that are often impossible to reproduce under physiological conditions; 3) the assessment of molecules different to those really circulating in our bodies; 4) the use of formulations whose composition, preparation, dosage and ingredients do not resemble those used in the studies available; 5) the creation of a scientific narrative designed more to meet the needs of researchers and manufacturers than consumer expectations.

In the last 5-10 years, for example, the scientific literature has shown that polyphenols undergo drastic changes in the digestive tract and after absorption. These transformations, triggered by the human metabolism and its intestinal microflora, lead to the formation of new circulating molecules. Moreover, the outcome of this transformation and the effects on the body vary from one individual to another. Despite this, however, most preclinical studies and the subsequent description of the plant-based product consider only the original product before ingestion.
