August 2017

Firab, the Italian Foundation for Research in Organic Agriculture and Biodynamics, estimates that sales of organic products amount to €4.9 billion. Nielsen data also confirm the positive trend: in the period March 2016 to March 2017, retailer sales of organic products were €1 billion 270 million, up 19.7% on the previous year.

Revenues of almost 900,000 million were posted by specialist stores while the catering sector made about 377 million, direct and online sales 402 million (Nomisma data) and exports accounted for around 1.8 billion (Assobio based on Nielsen data).

Food safety and health, concern for the environment, stiffer controls and better quality: these were the reasons given by Italian families for choosing organic products. Today more than 20 million people out of a total of 24.5 million choose organics.
